Tam Lin by Pamela Dean
– Deep Secret by Diana Wynne Jones

– The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley
– House of Shadows by Rachel Neumeier
– King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner
– one of the Vorkosigan saga by Lois McMaster Bujold
– one of the Mary Stewart books
– Brat Farrar or Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey
– one book by Elizabeth Goduge
– Betsy’s Wedding by Maud Hart Lovelace
– The Winter Prince by Elizabeth Wein
– Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner
– Gaudy Night by Dorothy Sayers
– Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner

Well, I have managed to read a few more! And enjoyed them all very much. DWJ’s Deep Secret is an underappreciated book, I think–at least in the sense that it’s relatively unknown even amongst fairly serious DWJ fans. And Rachel Neumeier’s House of Shadows is so lovely. Not one for every reader, certainly, but great if you’re the type of person who enjoys slow character development, understated romance, and truly lovely descriptions. Which I do. And I like the fact that it’s not a fairy tale retelling, and yet has the cadences and resonance of a fairy tale, especially the beginning. Plus a very VERY SPOILERLY bit related to Mage Ankennes which I will not go into, except to say that there’s a brilliantly subverted trope there, which made me think a lot about readerly expectations and so on.

  1. Ah, Josephine Tey!! Daughter of Time is wonderful and clever, an original tour de force, but Brat Farrar is Tey at her best! Read it first.

I think I probably will, especially since I’ve reread Daughter of Time more recently than I’ve read Brat Farrar. Besides the fact that I love Eleanor muchly.
